A Sisterhood Support System

Sierra Tallen is a law undergraduate at Carleton University. She is a member of Alpha Pi Phi and I had the absolute pleasure of being close friends with her for the last 7 years. Hearing her gush about how awesome being in a sorority is led me to ask her some questions about the impact it has had on her life, check out what she had to say!

What makes the Greek community so special?

What makes the community so special is that everyone is unique. We as individuals are different in so many ways but when we come together we all have a common trait. We all believe in love, loyalty and friendship. This is what our sorority is about. It sounds pretty cliche but it’s all true. Without this group of girls that I have become a part of I don’t know where I’d be.

Why did you join?

The reason I joined is because in my first year I found it hard to put myself out there and make friends. I’m usually pretty outgoing so it was strange for me to come into a new setting and not know how to make friends as easily as I’d done in highschool. I had heard about Alpha Pi Phi on res and went to a couple events. After going to the first meet and greet event I fell in love with the sisters. They were all so welcoming and weren’t the cookie cutter stereotypes sorority girls are often made out to be. They were girls I felt I connected with and they became home for me.

How strong is the support system?

The support system in Alpha Pi Phi is one of the best I have ever been a part of. No matter what time it is or where you are, a sister is always there for you. The girls’ support is one like no other. Everyone has their hardships and everyone goes different things in their lives but one thing we have in common is that we love each other unconditionally. They’re there for a shoulder to cry on, if you need a personal therapist or just need someone to be around. No matter what is happening in my life I can always count on my sisters to be there for me.

What has been your best experience so far?

That is honestly such a tough question. I don’t think I can pinpoint a specific best experience so far because this experience as a whole has been for me the best experience. I’ve been in the sorority since my first year and I’m coming up on ending my third year. There are so many amazing memories and experiences I have of being a part of this organization. If I had to choose one though, it would be my initiation into the sisterhood. That experience and that memory will always be a part of me.
